Dr. Khadijah A. Mitchell (Dr. Dij)

Dr. Khadijah A. Mitchell is currently the Peter C.S. d'Aubermont, M.D. Scholar of Health and Life Sciences and Assistant Professor of Biology at Lafayette College. She is the Principal Investigator of the IT LAB (Integrative and Translational Laboratory for Applied Biology), which addresses biological and environmental determinants of lung and kidney cancer heath disparities for Precision Medicine purposes. She translates her research to the classroom where she teaches Precision Medicine and Molecular Genetics. Dr. Dij currently serves as the Co-Lead of the Racial and Ethnic Minorities Task Force for the COVID-19 Health Equity Response Team ran by the Pennsylvania Department of Health Office of Health Equity.

Previously, Dr. Dij was a National Cancer Institute Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institutes of Health and studied lung cancer health disparities. She earned her PhD in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and concurrently earned a graduate certificate in Health Disparities and Health Inequality from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Teaching from the Johns Hopkins Preparing Future Faculty Teaching Academy. As a trainee in the Johns Hopkins Center to Reduce Cancer Disparities, her primary research interests included cancer genetics, epigenetics, and prevention in minority populations. She also earned her MS in Biology from Duquesne University and a BS in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh.

As a founder of the Lafayette LEADERS program for underrepresented STEM majors, NCI Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellow, Instructor at the FAES Graduate School, Associate Faculty at Notre Dame of Maryland University,  and President of the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Scholars Association, Dr. Dij has always championed the recruitment and retention of women and minorities in STEM careers. Her passion for STEM education led her to found Junior Research Scholars, Inc., a STEM mentorship-based nonprofit for disadvantaged youth (K-16).

Dr. Dij is the recipient of many honors and awards at the faculty (Peter C.S. d'Aubermont, M.D.  Scholar of Health and Life Sciences, Lafayette College James P. Crawford Research Mentorship Award, NCI GMaP Cancer Disparities Research Network Travel Award, and American Association for Cancer Research Minority & MSI Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award), postdoctoral (Gordon Research Seminar First Place Research Poster Award, NIH Summer Mentor Award, Carl Alden Scholar Award for Cancer Research Excellence, NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence, and American Association for Cancer Research Scholar-in-Training Award), and graduate (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine David E. Rogers Award for Professionalism, Medical Ethics, and Community Leadership, American Association for Cancer Research Scholar-in-Training Award, and Johns Hopkins Martin Luther King Award for Community Service) levels for her research, teaching, and service leadership.

When not using her expertise to promote health and STEM education equity, you can catch Dr. Dij watching Pittsburgh Steelers football games, crafting with her Cricut, and trying new smoothie recipes (but not at the same time).
