Dr. Khadijah A. Mitchell (Dr. Dij)
Dr. Khadijah A. Mitchell is currently an Assistant Professor in the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the Fox Chase Cancer Center at Temple University Health System. Her research laboratory addresses biological, environmental, and behavioral determinants of lung and kidney cancer health disparities for precision prevention and precision medicine purposes.
Most recently, she was the endowed Peter C.S. d'Aubermont, MD Scholar of Health and Life Sciences, Assistant Professor of Biology, and the Principal Investigator of the IT LAB (Integrative and Translational Laboratory for Applied Biology) in the Biology Department at Lafayette College.
Previously, Dr. Mitchell was a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis with Dr. Brid M. Ryan (an Earl Stadtman Investigator). She earned her PhD in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Genetic Medicine with Dr. Stephen B. Baylin (a National Academy of Sciences member). Additionally, she secured a Graduate Certificate in Health Disparities and Health Inequality from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management and a Graduate Certificate in Teaching from the Johns Hopkins University Teaching Academy. Dr. Mitchell completed her MS in Biology from the Duquesne University Department of Biological Sciences with Dr. Nancy Trun. She also obtained a BS in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences and an Undergraduate Certificate in Conceptual Foundations of Medicine from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science.
Her higher education leadership roles include, Founder of the Lafayette Leadership and Enrichment Academy for Diverse Emerging Researchers and Scientists (LEADERS) for underrepresented STEM majors, Co-Chair of the NCI CCR Fellows & Young Investigators Association, NCI Sallie Rosen Kaplan Postdoctoral Fellow for Women Scientists in Cancer Research, and first Vice President and second President of the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Scholars Association. Her passion for STEM education led her to found Junior Research Scholars, Inc., a STEM mentorship-based nonprofit for disadvantaged youth (K-16). Dr. Mitchell champions the recruitment and retention of women and minorities in biomedical research and health professions careers.
Dr. Mitchell is the recipient of many honors and awards at the faculty, postdoctoral, and graduate levels for her research, teaching, mentorship, and service leadership; and uses her expertise to promote health equity and higher education equity.
